Free tool for comparison digital images

DiffImg - the free tool for pixel-by-pixel comparison of digital images

Virtually any personal digital photo archive you can find a large number of identical images. Of course, most users would like to get rid of duplicates that occupy precious disk space. The easiest method to quickly identify similar images is to compare the sizes of files. However, for more precise and accurate analysis, you will need additional tools. One such tool is a free application called DiffImg, allowing to identify the differences between the two images at the level of individual pixels.

DiffImg boasts support for most common file formats (BMP, PNG, GIF, ICO, JPG, MNG, PBM, PGM,  TIFF,  PPM, TGA, XBM and XPM). According to the developers, this list can be added by installing the appropriate extensions. Working with the tool starts with the selection of compared images. DiffImg analyzes user image for a few seconds and highlights the differences found by the pixel mask.

Sometimes tell the difference with the naked eye (especially with minimum differences) can be difficult. In this case, you can get help from additional viewing modes. Press «Difference Image» and «Display Difference Image» in the toolbar and look at the miniature window «Difference», is displayed in the bottom left of the screen. If the specified window is painted flat gray, this means that the selected images are not different from each other. Otherwise, you will be able to see the modified pixels. For example, when you apply a filter, removing "red eye", you can find a group of points in the field image.

In the «Settings», users can set up various application settings, for example, to regulate the permissible level of similarity, and use a different method of calculating differences. Unfortunately, to find the difference between these methods can not everyone, because of lack of a clear reference. However, for very effective work with the program you just learn its basic functions and tools.

Copy of the application on Windows 7, Vista and XP can be downloaded for free from the official website - http://thehive.xbee.net .
